How Do I Begin? Three Options To Riding A Horse

Starting your journey in horse riding is exciting ✨—but it can also feel a little overwhelming at first. At our equestrian centre, we understand that every rider comes with different goals, budgets, and levels of commitment. That’s why there isn’t just one way to begin. Instead, there are three main pathways into horse riding: hire, lease/part‑lease, and ownership.
Each option offers a different level of responsibility, time commitment, and financial investment. The right choice depends on what you want to get out of your riding experience.
1️⃣ Hire
Hiring a horse is the most accessible and flexible way to start riding. 🐎 When you hire, you’re paying for the use of one of our well‑schooled horses for a lesson or a set period of time.
All care, feeding, grooming, and veterinary needs remain the responsibility of the equestrian centre.
Why choose hiring?
-
🌟 Ideal for beginners and casual riders
-
⏳ No long‑term commitment
-
💸 No responsibility for horse care or costs outside riding time
-
🐴 Opportunity to ride different horses and build confidence
Hiring allows you to focus entirely on learning riding skills in a safe and supportive environment. It’s the perfect entry point if you’re still discovering whether horse riding is the right fit for you.
2️⃣ Lease / Part Lease
Leasing (sometimes called part‑boarding) is a step up in commitment and involvement. 🤝 In a lease arrangement, you share the use of a horse with the centre or another rider.
Depending on the agreement, you may ride a specific horse on set days each week and contribute to some of the horse’s care and upkeep costs.
Why choose leasing?
-
🐴 More consistent bond with one horse
-
📅 Increased riding time and responsibility
-
🎯 Opportunity to develop more advanced skills
-
⚖️ A “middle ground” before full ownership
Leasing is ideal for riders who are confident in the basics and want to deepen their connection with a horse without taking on full ownership responsibilities.
3️⃣ Own
Owning a horse is the most rewarding—but also the most demanding—option. ❤️ As an owner, you are fully responsible for the horse’s wellbeing, including boarding, feeding, veterinary care, farrier services, training, and daily management.
Many owners keep their horses at an equestrian centre to ensure access to professional facilities and support.
Why choose ownership?
-
🐎 Complete freedom to build a lifelong partnership
-
🛠️ Full control over training and care decisions
-
💕 Deep emotional bond with your horse
-
🏆 Best suited for committed, experienced riders
Ownership is a long‑term commitment that requires time, financial stability, and a strong understanding of horse care. For many riders, it represents the ultimate goal of their equestrian journey.
🌟 Which Option is Right for You?
There is no “correct” starting point—only what suits you best right now. Many riders begin with hiring, progress to leasing as their confidence grows, and eventually move into ownership when they are ready.
At our equestrian centre, we are here to guide you through each stage. Whether you’re stepping into the saddle for the first time or considering your first horse, we’ll help you find the path that fits your goals.
